President

Sean McDermott is the owner, founder, and president of Summit Investment Advisors. Sean began his career in financial planning after graduating from St. John’s University in 1989. Thereafter, he earned his Certified Financial Planner degree from the College for Financial Planning. He holds Series 7 and 63, and is a registered Series 24 and 51 Principal Supervisor through LPL Financial. In addition, Sean is a licensed Life/Health Variable Annuity Insurance Agent.

Sean has received numerous awards and national recognition during his career as a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™. His credits include: ranked in the top 2% nationally of LPL Financial advisors*; member of LPL Financial Chairman’s Council*; nationally recognized in  Money Magazine by the Financial Planning Association; rated Top Independent Wealth Advisor by Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal**

Sean’s areas of expertise include: Investment Management, Financial Planning, Estate Planning, and Retirement Planning.

A significant part of Sean’s career has been dedicated to teaching at Fortune 500 corporations, health care institutions, and colleges where he has been able to expand his client services throughout the Minneapolis/St. Paul area and to other states.

Sean lives is North Oaks, Minnesota with his wife, Gina and their 3 children, Logan, Landon, and Lexa. When not busy working to grow and improve his client services, Sean enjoys attending and supporting his children’s busy school and extra-curricular activities with his wife. Sean renews his energy by playing golf in Minnesota and Florida, riding his bike, and trail hiking.

Vice President

Since beginning his financial planning career, Nathan has worked with a broad scope of clients managing a full spectrum of financial planning issues. He graduated from the University of Minnesota with a Bachelor of Individualized Studies degree highlighting three separate majors, marketing, communication, and computer science.

After college, he continued his studies at Kaplan University and College of Financial Planning where he obtain his licenses and increased his knowledge of financial matters. Nathan joined the Summit Team in 2007, serving clients with a goal of maximum client satisfaction. In 2013 Nathan was awarded the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional designation from the College of Financial Planning. In 2016, Nathan was recognized as a top financial advisor and named to LPL’s Patriot’s Club. This premier honor is awarded to less than 10% of the firm’s approximately 14,000 advisors nationwide. In April of 2015, Nathan appeared in the Wall Street Journal as “Ten Five Star Wealth Managers You Need to Know,” as well as Smart Money Matters with host Brad Sattin. Additionally, he appeared in Minneapolis / St Paul Magazine as a Five-Star Wealth Manager* for 2017, 2016, 2015, and 2013.

Nathan currently holds a series 7 and 63 securities qualifications through LPL Financial, an Investment Advisor Representative (IAR), and holds life insurance license with variable lines.

Nathan enjoys spending time with his wife Sarah and sons Micah and Isaac. He is a 16-year resident of Minneapolis and helped start a new church in the area where he gives of his time on the Elder board and Finance Team. To relax, he loves to spend time outdoors running, hiking, biking, and traveling.

Joel is a Financial Consultant with 27 years of experience providing comprehensive financial planning services to his clients. Joel offers comprehensive wealth management services including financial, education, retirement, investment, and estate planning.  He has been awarded the Five-Star Wealth Manager* for five consecutive years.

Joel was born and raised in the Twin Cities and has two children, Alexandra and Michael. He is married to his wife Kathleen.  When away from the office Joel enjoys spending time with his family, fishing, playing hockey, golf, and enjoys the outdoors.

Wealth Advisor

As part of the operations team, Scott works directly with clients providing portfolio updates and other services. He takes a proactive approach keeping clients notified of important changes. Scott graduated from the Eli Broad College of Business at Michigan State University with a major in finance. He has been in the financial planning industry for several years, joining Summit Investment Advisors in 2013. He possesses Series 7 and Series 63 securities registrations through LPL Financial as well as life and health insurance licenses.

When he’s not in the office, Scott enjoys spending with his family, traveling with friends, and watching sports.

Wealth Advisor

Russell began his career in the financial services industry in 2007.  He has worked at several other financial firms in the Twin Cities and has experience in operations, financial planning, investment research, marketing and public speaking.  Russell joined Summit Investment Advisors in 2011 and is the Operations Manager for the team.

After Graduating from Bethel University with a BA in Philosophy, Russell served as an Officer in the Minnesota Army National Guard for 6 years, achieving the rank of Captain. Russell currently holds a series 7 and 63 securities registrations, series 24 (General Securities Principal) through LPL Financial and life, accident & health insurance licenses with variable lines.  He is an Investment Advisor Representative (IAR) and an LPL Registered Representative and is working on the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional designation.

Russell lives in Circle Pines with his wife, Jena, and two children, Calvin and Lucia. Russell enjoys spending time outdoors, playing guitar, bass and drums and is a Green Bay Packers fan.

Registered Admin

Lori became a member of the Summit operations team in August 2014. She obtained the Series 7 and Series 63 securities registrations through LPL Financial as well as Life and Health Insurance licenses in 2003. Lori has worked with LPL firms since 2005 and is trained as a Life Coach. Her educational background is Business Management with accounting plus significant industry experience in financial services and health care business offices since 1994.

Outside of Summit Lori devotes her time to her life coaching practice, enjoys an active outdoorsy lifestyle which includes biking, golfing, skiing, boating, hiking and travel. Her book “Not It” An Approach to Life was released July 2014. Lori has 2 sons who are Iraqi veterans, a daughter-in-law and 2 granddaughters. A longtime Rochester area resident, Lori likes exploring the Twin Cities and getting to know the area.

Dir. First Impressions

Carol has been with Summit for over a decade. She helps keep operations running efficiently around the office and also assists with scheduling and client communications at the front desk.

Dir. First Impressions

Debbie is Summit’s primary front desk staff member and is also the newest member of the Summit team. She strives to ensure all clients feel welcome and important.

Operations Assistant

Margaret has a background in brokerage operations with 9 years at Summit. She assists at the front desk and aids in various projects around the office.

Administrative Assistant

Elisabeth has a background as an artist with a degree in the Fine Arts from the University of Northwestern.  She assists the team with marketing needs and aids in various projects around the office.
